CHAPTER FIVE

KAI

It’s about midnight, and I sit at the granite island in the dream kitchen sliding my spoon under the ripe berries.

Davin’s house is fucking amazing. It’s actually a mansion. A short drive from Forage, when there’s no traffic, he lives in a seaside town just outside the city. As we approached the house, we drove up a winding hill to see a massive, sprawling Victorian with sweeping views of the Atlantic behind it.

“Wow,” I say, getting out of my car. “This place is….”

I’m going to say amazing, but he talks first, sounding playful; “Overblown. Ostentatious. Self-indulgent.”

He can’t really think that’s what I was going to say. When I look at him with horror on my face, he laughs out loud. A real, full-bodied belly laugh.

“It is a little bit, though,” he says, his voice dropping conspiratorially. “I got it at a really steep discount, paid to restore it, and got super attached to it. It’s way too much house for just me, but I always thought….”

His voice trails off, and I realize that maybe, just maybe, Davin’s single life on the road wasn’t necessarily 100% by choice. Or at least, it’s not the only season in life he imagines.

He ushers me inside, and as expected, every room is more gorgeous than the last. Marble in the bathrooms; a custom kitchen outfitted for a restaurant. Bedrooms with themes that match, down to the smallest detail.

The room he takes me to isn’t the largest, he says, but it is his favorite. It’s more spacious than the tiny apartment that nearly bankrupted me back in New York. There’s a big four poster bed, a desk and even a sitting area. An ensuite bathroom and a walk-in closet that’s big enough to live in.

Holy shit.

But the best part? He pulls back blinds and I see double doors that swing open onto a small balcony overlooking the ocean.

“A little too cold tonight,” he admits. “But a hell of a view in the daytime.”

Then he’d carried my stuff up to the room, insisting I stay and get comfortable.

My boxes and suitcases and – oh my god, the horror – two trash bags stuffed with who knows what that my mother shoved at me as I left for work were neatly stacked by the door.

He pauses for a long second by the door.

“It’s yours as long as you want it,” he says. “You’ve had a long day. I’ll let you get settled in. But treat the house like it’s your own and if you need me, I’m just next door.”

He points at the wall behind the bed.

Are you fucking kidding me? He’s sleeping on the other side of the wall.

After an awkward moment, he turns to leave and I suddenly call his name.

“Davin, thank you.”

He turns back and winks one of those big brown eyes at me. Then he’s out the door.

Holy shit.

I get settled and try to unwind. Not happening. I wander down to the kitchen, where I’m now eating delicious raspberries.

A sort of healthy sweet treat after working late, but nothing that’ll keep me up.
